Construction is underway on a new 64-unit housing complex in northeast Edmonton designed for women and children escaping violence.
Win House has started site preparation for The Miller Project, which is expected to open in early 2029.
The five-storey building will offer what’s known as second- and third-stage housing, a form of affordable transitional housing. Its 64 one-, two- and three-bedroom units will be able to shelter more than 150 people, each for a stay of two to three years. The ground floor will hold Win House offices, shared community areas and program rooms.
Win House interim CEO Ashley Baxter said the city is short on safe options for people leaving an emergency shelter, which is stretching the time families spend in shelter.
“This building will help create the sustainability of a safe exit”
The numbers reflect the strain. Win House sheltered 330 women and 225 children last year, and the length of stays at its emergency shelter has grown by 40 per cent. Baxter described one woman with three children who spent eight months in the shelter because she couldn’t find a place to move to. The organization estimates that just four in every 100 women are able to get into second-stage housing.
Tenants at The Miller Project will be placed through referrals and will pay a share of their income in rent. Baxter said the aim is to help residents put their money where it matters most while building financial stability.
The $34-million project is located at 14921 50 St. NW.
