Edmonton’s historic High Level Bridge is slated for a massive construction blitz in 2027.
Following severe storm damage over the summer of 2026 that triggered erosion and slope stability issues in the river valley, the City has opted to tackle emergency stabilization and its major scheduled rehabilitation concurrently.
Moving the rehabilitation schedule up by an entire year means both initiatives will wrap up in a single construction season rather than dragging across two separate years, significantly cutting down on long-term headaches for commuters.
While long-term planning for an eventual bridge replacement moves forward, this upcoming work is designed to keep the crossing safe, functional, and accessible. The comprehensive overhaul includes:
-
Fixing critical structural elements, including bridge bearings and land-based substructures.
-
Resurfacing the deck and upgrading structural drainage systems.
-
Removing a central column obstructing the east sidewalk to enhance safety and comfort for pedestrians and cyclists.
During construction, the High Level Bridge will be fully closed to vehicle traffic. Pedestrians can still expect access when safely possible, though detours and alternate routes will be announced prior to construction kickoff.
To help offset the traffic strain caused by the High Level Bridge closure, the City is adjusting its broader infrastructure timeline. Specifically, the scheduled rehabilitation of the northbound lanes on the Low Level Bridge has been deferred from 2027 to 2028 to keep traffic flowing smoothly elsewhere in the core.
