Connor McDavid had a goal and 4 assists, Owen Michaels scored his first NHL goal, and the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 9-7 on Thursday night for their first win of the 2026/2027 season.
Evan Bouchard had an impressive three-point night, contributing a goal and two assists. He made history by becoming the first defenseman in NHL history to accumulate eight points (four goals and four assists) in his team’s first two games of the season.
Leon Draisaitl added two goals and an assist for the Oilers, while Vasily Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen each contributed one goal and one assist.
Devon Levi made his first NHL start since January 20, 2025, when he was with the Buffalo Sabres, stopping 15 of the 22 shots he faced.
For the Canucks, Marco Rossi scored twice and recorded an assist, while Elias Pettersson contributed a goal and two assists. Paul Cotter, Brock Boeser, Arshdeep Bains, and Jamie Oleksiak each had a goal and an assist as well.
Kevin Lankinen made 12 saves on 20 shots for Vancouver before being pulled midway through the second period. Leevi Merilainen, who was claimed off waivers by the Canucks and was wearing a Senators helmet, came in as relief and stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced.
This matchup marked the second high-scoring game between the two teams this week, following the Canucks’ 6-5 overtime victory in their season opener on Tuesday.
The Oilers will return home on Saturday to take on the Seattle Kraken.
