With the calendar now into August, that means the return of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, the largest and longest running Fringe Theatre Festival in North America.
The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival spotlights 209 theatre productions across 37 venues, with performances by more than 1,600 artists from Edmonton, across Canada, and more than 6 countries.
One of the shows at this year’s festival is called FlyBoy: From There & Back Again which tells the true story of John Edward Tayler.
FlyBoy starts with a young man chasing his dream, then it takes the audience into the hard truth of war, prison, and coming home again. John’s journey is personal, moving, and full of hope.
Set before and during the Second World War, this one-person play follows a young pilot whose dream of flying is changed by war, loss, and survival.
Made from recently found audio tapes and handwritten pages, the play uses John’s own words.
The person starring in the production is none other than John Edward Tayler’s daughter, Devon Tayler.
Darrell Stranger was able to speak with Devon about the show and what it means to the Tayler to have this story told.
