Bison Loop Road in Elk Island National Park reopened on Wednesday, August 5, allowing visitors to observe wildlife during the bison rut, or breeding season. However, the rest of the park remains temporarily closed as crews work on flood-related cleanup and to address hazardous trees.
During the bison rut, mature males become more alert and aggressive as they compete for the attention of female bison. Visitors are urged to remain in their vehicles at all times, slow down, and adhere to posted speed limits.
While it is typically recommended that visitors maintain a distance of 100 meters from bison, it is advised to double or triple that distance during the breeding season. Additionally, to prevent bison jams, visitors should keep traffic moving at a slow and steady pace when viewing the animals.
Elk Island National Park had to close early last week due to flooding, which made some roadways impassable and caused downed trees.
