Several athletes from the provincial capital are returning home with medals after participating in a major international event that was previously hosted in their city.
Joshua Ofori from Edmonton, along with Sherwood Park’s Amber-Jane Wall and Reed De’Aeth, each brought home bronze medals from the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland. This 11-day multi-sport event takes place every four years and concluded on Sunday, August 2.
De’Aeth won his bronze medal as a member of the three-on-three men’s wheelchair basketball team. The 23-year-old, who also represented Canada at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, led his team with 9 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds, helping them secure a 19-9 victory over the host team from Scotland.
Both Ofori and Wall are boxers. Ofori earned his bronze in men’s boxing (80 kilograms). The 22-year-old boxer, who trains at St. Albert’s Marshall Boxing Club, lost in a unanimous decision in the semifinal to India’s Ankush Panghal, who went on to win gold by defeating England’s Dimeji Shittu. Wall, 29, also boxes out of the Marshall Club and secured bronze in women’s boxing (51 kilograms) after losing by unanimous decision in her semifinal match against India’s Sakshi Chaudhary.
Canada finished third in the overall medal standings, bringing home a total of 62 medals, including 19 golds. Australia topped the medal count with 171 medals, 70 of which were gold, followed by England, which secured 110 medals, including 29 golds. A total of 36 countries participated in the event.
