Edmonton and Calgary have activated a temporary mutual aid agreement to assist the capital city as it deals with widespread damage from repeated severe storms.
Certified forestry crews from Calgary are expected to begin arriving in Edmonton on Wednesday. They will work in rotations of up to seven days, supporting local crews with tree removal and debris cleanup efforts.
City officials say damage to Edmonton’s urban tree canopy has been extensive, with demand for assistance far exceeding the capacity of Edmonton’s forestry teams and local contractors.
Calgary will also deploy waste and recycling services crews and equipment as the week progresses.
In a statement, the City of Edmonton expressed deep gratitude to its southern neighbour.
“The City of Edmonton and its Parks and Roads Services team is extending their appreciation and deepest gratitude to the City of Calgary and its teams. This rapid mobilization is a powerful example of Alberta municipalities working together in times of need,” said the City of Edmonton in a statement Tuesday evening.
