Leduc RCMP has officially launched its new Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) program, bringing aerial technology to policing efforts across the region.
The drones will support a range of operations, including search and rescue missions, collision and crime scene documentation, and disaster response.
“The use of RPAS technology allows our officers to gather timely and accurate information while reducing risk to both the public and responding personnel,” said Insp. Kiel Samotej.
The program has already proven useful in several incidents.
RPAS units were deployed during a standoff in Leduc County, to investigate a reported shooting in a field, and to examine a stolen vehicle abandoned in a farmer’s field.
All RPAS operations will be conducted in full compliance with applicable legislation, Transport Canada regulations, and RCMP policy.
The drones will be deployed primarily in Leduc, Calmar, and around Edmonton International Airport.
