You may not be familiar with the name Mercedes Brown, but that will change with the release of her debut album Light The Fire.
The Wet’suwet’en Tsimshian singer-songwriter released the Album June 19 and with it, reaches back to a time when rock music was built on grit and truth.
The album also announces her as an artist of rare instinct and intention.
The album followed the release of her debut single Playing With Fire.
Built on a churning alt-rock foundation and driven by a vocal performance that is at once restrained and explosive, the song traces the edge between control and collapse with unsettling clarity.
Brown wrote it as a poem first and that spirit carries into the song itself.
Brown is Tsayu (beaver clan), from the Wet’suwet’en and Tsimshian Nation, and her identity as an Indigenous artist from Red Deer, Alberta, informs not just who she is but how she writes.
The young singer-songwriter is hoping to build off this first album and continue on a path that inspires not only herself, but her family and others.
Brown spoke with Darrell Stranger about the album and the process behind the creation of it, as well as what she has coming next.
