The City of Edmonton is honouring the achievements of 67 Indigenous youth who have successfully completed the Nîkânîw Indigenous Youth Leadership Program, an initiative that continues to empower young leaders while strengthening the city’s aquatic facilities and cultural connections.
Nîkânîw, which translates to “one who leads the way” in Cree, is delivered by the Cities aquatics team.
The program is open to Indigenous youth aged 14 to 22 and blends essential practical skills with deep cultural learning. Participants receive comprehensive training in water safety, first aid, and CPR, alongside leadership development.
A focus of the program is fostering respect for Mother Earth and the sacred element of water, integrating traditional Indigenous teachings throughout the curriculum. The program’s core components include aquatic leadership skills, cultural teachings, life skills training, and pre-employment workshops.
Since its launch 20 years ago, more than 560 Indigenous youth have participated in Nîkânîw. In 2026 alone, with dedicated support from the City’s instructional team, this year’s cohort earned an impressive 189 professional certifications.
