Police say a four-year-old girl died after being hit by a car in northeast Edmonton.
They say the girl was walking in a parking lot with her mother on Sunday evening but broke free and ran onto the nearby street, where she was struck by a Jeep.
Bystanders immediately attended the girl and she was taken to hospital, but later died of her injuries.
They say neither speed nor impaired driving are factors in the accident and the 23-year-old driver remained at the scene.
The Edmonton Police Service says its major collisions branch is investigating.
Support services are being made available to everyone involved in the tragedy.
