On May 3, Residents of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo are invited to come together from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Doug Barnes Cabin in Thickwood to reflect, remember, and reconnect on the 10-year anniversary of the Horse River Wildfire, with a day of free activities focused on healing, and community strength.
Events to commemorate the wildfire anniversary will also take place throughout May in Anzac, Conklin, Janvier, Saprae Creek Estates, Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan.
Nadia McCrone, Manager of Council Relations with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, tells CFWE the wildfire’s 10-year anniversary is a time for reflection and strengthening connections with neighbors.
McCrone highlights the Doug Barnes Cabin, the venue that was saved 10 years ago during the wildfires, will host the gathering where organizations such as the Red Cross will provide social supports, with the Salvation Army cooking up grilled cheese sandwiches and serving hot beverages on site. Other organizations such as Arts Council of Wood Buffalo will provide arts and crafts activities for children.
“Ten years later, we still carry the memories of those days, but we also carry the spirit, strength and togetherness that got us through them. We should be proud of how we supported each other then, and how we continue to show up for one another today,” says Mayor Sandy Bowman. “While we know that everyone will reflect in their own way, this gathering is an opportunity to pause, remember and look ahead with optimism.”
