The City of Edmonton will be activating their cold weather response on Friday at 9 a.m., as temperatures are expected to hit below -20C over the weekend.
The response will be in effect until Tuesday morning and could be extended if weather conditions persist.
The extreme weather response keeps city facilities open, including libraries and recreation centres, for people seeking warmth from the cold.
Day services will be offered at shelters across the city:
- Bissell Centre (10530 96 St. NW) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday;
- Boyle Street Community Services (15308 Stony Plain Rd.) from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., seven days a week;
- Canora Community Impact Centre (10105 153 St. NW) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday;
- Mosaic Centre (6504 132 Ave. NW) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and
- Strathcona Baptist Church Community Impact Centre (8318 104 St. NW) from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday to Friday.
The Al Rashid Mosque, located at 13070 113 St. NW, will have their doors open overnight from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. throughout the response.
If you see a person struggling outside in the cold, you are urged to contact the 24/7 Crisis Diversion non-emergency support line at 211.
