The Edmonton Oilers have advanced to the second round of the NHL Playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the LA Kings late Wednesday night at Rogers Place. A matchup that was pretty even 5 on 5 became lopsided in favor of the Oil after finishing the series with a deadly powerplay, going 9-20 in the five games.
Edmonton eliminated Los Angeles in the opening round for the third year in a row after coming out on top in six games in 2023 and seven in 2022. The three year streak of making it to the second round is the first time since 1990-1992.
This is the first postseason series in Oilers history where they were perfect on the penalty kill (12-for-12). Head coach Kris Knoblauch spoke to media about special teams being the major difference maker in the series.
The series turned physical following the first few games, Darnell Nurse spoke to media following the series win discussing his teams resilience in finding different ways to win.
The Oilers failed to make it past the second round last year against the Vegas Golden Knights, losing the series in six games. They’ll look to move to the Western Conference Final in a matchup between the winner of the Nashville/Vancouver series.
