The Alberta Government announced that 500 additional firefighters will be at the ready to aid in the wildfire season by mid-May.
Windspeaker Radio Network spoke with Mellissa Story, Provincial Information Officer with the Alberta Wildfire says that preparations for this years Wildfire season has been ongoing for several months, with training underway and will be sent out to where they are needed most within the province.
Once the firefighters are deployed in Mid-May, there will be over 800 type one and type two firefighters with additional access to emergency firefighters if needed throughout the summer, along with the Alberta Government receiving additional funding for 100 firefighters.
Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks for the Alberta Government spoke with Windspeaker Radio Network as he speaks on last years wildfire season, and adding the additional attack crews, water bombers, air tankers and night vision helicopters to fight wildfires throughout the night with 13, 24 hour crew members on the ground aiding in putting out the fires.
Minister Loewen says this years wildfire season has seen over 180 fires, with 150 of those fires extinguished.
Minister Loewen adds that the weather is playing a factor to the wildfire season, as he says with more moist weather they are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.
