A piece of Edmonton’s aviation history could be seen engulfed in flames on Monday evening.
Hangar-11, the historic WW II-era hangar located in downtown Edmontonn near the NAIT campus, could be seen engulfed in flames with thick plumes of smoke coming from it.
The building, which is on the site of the city’s former municipal airport was one of the last remaining structures of it’s kind.
The hangar, which was built in 1942, in partnership with the U.S. military, was impartial in its time and designed to distribute war materials, along with aircraft to allied forces on the eastern front during WW II.
The fire call came in at approximately 6:56 p.m. according to a representative from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. A total of 11 crews were called to site and crews were still on site early Tuesday morning.
The historic hangar was recognized as a Municipal Heritage Resource in recent years and included on Canada;s 10 most endangered buildings through the National Trust.
Students and staff from neighbouring NAIT campus were sent home due to smoke and asked to remain off site with air quality concerns being posed.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and no word yet regarding estimated damages.
