Indigenous Voice Master Class

This 6-hour workshop is a culturally responsive, performance-focused experience designed for Indigenous music artists across all genres. Co-led by voice coaches Micah Barnes (European Settler, Treaty 13) and Donita Large (Cree, Treaty 6), the session blends contemporary vocal techniques with Indigenous-centered approaches in a Two-Worlds framework.

Through guided exercises artists will:

·       Learn body and vocal warm-ups from contemporary vocal traditions

·       Explore the intersection of artistic and Indigenous identity

·       Deconstruct internal and external challenges of performing in mainstream spaces

·       Receive individual performance coaching

Build confidence in sharing stories and becoming comfortable being our authentic selves on stage

The workshop is designed to create a supportive, culturally safe space for Indigenous artists at all levels of experience to grow, connect, and explore their voice.

Meet The Coaches

Micah Barnes, Vocal, Performance and Artist Development Coach

Micah Barnes is a Top Music Industry Coach with Juno, Emmy winning and Grammy Nominated Artists among his clients, as well as serving as a Vocal Coach & Musical Advisor on Canada’s Got Talent for three seasons. An Alma Records/Universal Canada recording artist, Micah has toured the world as a member of internationally celebrated A Capella group The Nylons. Micah has experience working with a wide array of artists across every genre including Lorraine Segato (5 time Juno winner-Parachute Club), Monowhales (Juno winners for Best Breakthrough Act 2022) & J.P. Saxe (Grammy Nomination for Song Of The Year 2021) Through his Singers Playground studio Micah has brought his popular Performance Master Class to singers in Los Angeles, New York and across Canada. Designed and Taught Indigenous Voices Intensive with Donita Large at Banff Centre for Performing Arts 2012-2013 Vocal & performance coach on CBC TV’s “How To Solve A Problem Like Maria” with Andrew Lloyd Webber 2011 Taught Performance at Canada’s Music Incubator, Toronto Metropolitan University & Seneca College & Highways Performance University in Santa Monica California. Led a variety of industry panels at Canadian Music Week, including his Vocal Performance Master Class. Currently coaching his “The Art Of Vocal Performance” workshop monthly in NYC.

Donita Large, Indigenous Associate Voice & Wellness Coach

Donita Large is a multi-faceted Indigenous artist and health promotions professional. She currently lives in Edmonton and is Cree from Saddle Lake First Nation in Treaty Six Territory. As a singer-songwriter she is known for blending blues, country, rock, and Cree traditional music. She performs with her group Donita Large & The Small Band and has released music such as "Ancestors in my Bones" and "Cree Communion". Her work reflects her cultural roots, a depth of personal and historical truths, healing and strength, which are themes included in her upcoming album “The Ancestors”. Donita also has contributed to Indigenous media projects by co-composing music for a documentary, an animated series, and provided direction and consultation on numerous Indigenous educational videos. Donita began her mentorship as an Associate Vocal Coach at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in the Indigenous Voice Intensive Program. Over five voice intensives, she was mentored by Vocal and Performance Coach Micah Barnes and Master Voice Teacher David Smukler. Donita’s training in adult education, wellness and Indigenous knowledge systems combined with being an Indigenous artist, placed her as the first Indigenous Associate Vocal Coach in the Indigenous Arts program.
