The Edmonton Elks announced on Monday that they have signed 35-year-old quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson to a one-year contract worth $500,000, including incentives.
The California native, who has NFL experience, played the 2023 season in the United States Football League with the New Orleans Breakers after spending the previous five years with the Toronto Argonauts.
Bethel-Thompson was the starting QB in the Argo’s 2022 Grey Cup-winning season, where he finished the season with 23 touchdowns and a league-leading 4,731 passing yards.
Bethel-Thompson will assume the starting quarterback role for the Elks. The team will also move their current starting quarterback Tre Ford to a backup role for development, according to Chris Jones, head coach and general manager.
Ford started the 2023 season as the third-string quarterback, but blossomed when he was given the starting roll part-way into the season, helping the Elks get their first home win since 2019.
