Helping more Edmonton kids and their families find safe places to skate, ski and sled this winter is at the heart of a new partnership between EPCOR, the Edmonton Oil Kings and local community leagues.
With the onset of cooler weather and tens of thousands of local youngsters soon to head home for the winter break, the partners are teaming up with a multi-pronged campaign aimed at celebrating some of the city’s favorite forms of outdoor winter recreation by:
- distributing more than 90 grants to local community leagues to create safe skating rinks;
- hosting outdoor rink events with current Edmonton Oil Kings and alumni; and
- highlighting safe places to recreate through social media.
Jenn Morrison, senior manager of waste water maintenance at EPCOR spoke with Windspeaker Radio Network about the safety risks of why children shouldn’t skate on stormwater facilities and to find better alternative places to skate safely.
Morrison highlights the different alternative for families and children to visit to get in some outdoor skating and winter activities such as skating at the Victoria Oval, the outdoor ice rink in the Ice District outside of Rogers Place, and many local community league rinks to get more involved in winter activates.
Morrison goes on to talk about the signage seen near the storm water facilities and the risks of skating on the areas within the city.
Kevin Redomski, Edmonton Oil Kings director of Business Operations says that they want to work with EPCOR to use their voice to ensure safety for everyone when getting active in outdoor skating.
Radomski talks about the future outdoor events at the Orchards and Lango Lindo in early 2024 with the Edmonton Oil Kings and the mascot Louie the Lion are ready to join in the fun.
