Parks Canada is asking visitors to Elk Island National Park to slow down after a bison was struck and killed last month near the trail head of Hamburger Trail.
The incident marked the sixth bison death since 2020.
Digital speed signs in the park have caught motorists going as fast as 100 kilometres an hour over the speed limit – 144 km/h in a 40 km/h zone.
Elk Island is taking measures to slow down drivers, including installing speed bumps & signage. More measures will be implemented in the next year.
EINP has also launched a new initiative called Wildlife and Roads Project this summer, which monitors road-related instances of wildlife mortality in and around Elk Island National Park. So far, that has captured 534 animal mortalities, varying from frogs to squirrels to coyotes.
In the meantime, Parks Canada warns drivers to be extra wary of wildlife at dawn, dusk and during the night, and encourages visitors to report illegal activity to 780-852-6155 or toll-free at 1-877-852-3100.
