With the start of the school year approaching, school zones will soon be back in effect.
The speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour will apply between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on school days, where signs are posted.
Playground zones are in effect year-round and every day, from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset. This means that the time a playground zone ends is relative to the time of year. Since sunset happens earlier in the winter, the playground zone times will end earlier than in the warmer seasons.
If you are caught speeding in a school zone, and if you are caught driving anywhere from 1-50km over the speed limit, fines will double and could range from $75 – $475
Passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing could not only result in a potential accident but could net you a hefty fine of $567 and a loss of six demerits points.
