A 23-year-old Edmonton man is facing numerous charges including impaired operation causing death, in connection with a fatal collision on the Capilano Bridge on June 25th, which took the life of a 20-year-old woman.
On Sunday, June 25, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., Northeast Branch patrol officers responded to a collision call on the Capilano Bridge on Wayne Gretzky Drive.
A 2007 Dodge Ram was travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of Wayne Gretzky Drive at a high rate of speed.
The Ram truck narrowly missed colliding with an EPS patrol vehicle that happened to be travelling on the bridge southbound at the time. The truck then immediately struck a 2011 Audi that was travelling behind the patrol car.
The 20-year-old female passenger of the Audi was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics, while the 31-year-old driver of the Audi was treated and transported to hospital at that time by paramedics in critical condition, where he remains.
Paramedics also treated and transported the driver of the Dodge Ram to hospital in critical condition. His passenger, a 21-year-old female, was also taken to hospital with what appeared to be serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Speed and impairment were factors in this collision.
Tryton Desjarlais, 23, of Edmonton, has been charged with impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm (x2), impaired operation over 80 mgs%, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm (x2) and driving while unauthorized.
There have been a total of 12 fatal collisions with 15 fatalities on Edmonton roadways so far in 2023.
