Veteran center Brandon Sutter is one step closer to returning to the NHL according to hockey insiders.
Sutter spent six seasons with the Vancouver Canucks and was under contract to play a seventh, in the 2021-2022 season but due to extreme fatigue and heart problems, didn’t play his final season.
Hockey sources say that Sutter will now attend the Oilers training camp this fall on a professional try-out agreement.
After a longer than normal recovery period from contracting Covid, Sutter returned to the Canucks to finish the 202-2021 season.
Following his vaccination , Sutter experienced health concerns pertaining to his heart rate , during exercise.
He was spotted around the Canucks rinks during the 2021-22 season, skating and practising as a test to see if he was ready to re-start training. He was also seen frequently skating with the Red Deer Rebels, where he played junior hockey and his father Brent also managed.
He felt well enough by mid-season that he thought he would be able to make himself a free agent prior to the trade deadline , but fell short on time.
He now intends on beating the clock this time and getting the jump by skating in the Oilers training camp.
