Red Deer-born artist Elaine Cameron-Weir is returning to her hometown on Saturday, November 7, for a free speaking event at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery. The session begins at 2 p.m.
The event is presented by the Alberta University of the Arts in collaboration with the National Gallery of Canada through its national engagement initiative.
Now based in New York, Cameron-Weir explores how people navigate the unknown through systems such as science, religion, governance and the arts. Her sculptural work draws on objects associated with scientific, medical, military and spiritual settings, transforming them into forms that explore broader belief systems and structures of power.
Combining found objects with handcrafted materials, including enamel, glass, metal and leather, her installations often feature suspended elements supported by cables and architectural frameworks. Her work also incorporates elements such as heat, light and scent to explore themes of transformation and decay, while drawing attention to the relationship between perception and storytelling.
Her recent solo exhibitions include Dressing for Windows (Exploded View) at the SCAD Museum of Art in 2022 and STAR CLUB REDEMPTION BOOTH at the Henry Art Gallery in 2021.
