Vehicles began flowing through the last unfinished portion of the Tsuut’ina Parkway at noon on October 22, bringing to a close a major road project more than 13 years in the making.
The Southwest Calgary Ring Road agreement was formalized in 2013 by the Tsuut’ina Nation and the Government of Alberta. The partnership aimed to improve regional mobility while unlocking long-term economic opportunities on Nation land.
With Tsuut’ina Trail already linking Taza’s three villages, the newly opened Parkway now ties the network into Calgary’s southwest, connecting directly to the Westhills area.
A morning ceremony marked the occasion. Tsuut’ina Nation dancers and drummers performed first, followed by a land blessing led by Elder Charlie Crowchild and Traditional Helper David Meguinis. Remarks from Nation leaders and Taza representatives preceded the ribbon cutting. Guests then took part in a Round Dance inside the new roundabout to close the event.
Tsuut’ina Nation Minor Chief Zachary Manywounds says the Parkway is more than just a simple roadway.
Families expected to move into Taza Park in early 2026 will gain straightforward access via the Parkway to the area’s first major grocery store, a future Walmart.
