A major shift in local public safety goes into effect today (October 21) as the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) officially assumes full municipal policing responsibilities from the RCMP.
The transition comes as GPPS reaches a key operational milestone, boasting a force of over 80 sworn officers following the graduation of its fourth recruit class alongside two recent experienced officer cohorts.
As local jurisdiction transfers to GPPS, Grande Prairie RCMP personnel are transitioning their operations to a new detachment in Clairmont.
A ceremony to mark the transition will take place at Bonnets Energy Centre today at 1:00 p.m.
