A high-speed street race ended in tragedy Tuesday night in Edmonton when a motorcycle left the roadway, mounted a sidewalk, and smashed into a crowded bus shelter.
Just before 9 p.m., an 18-year-old rider on a 2004 Yamaha YZF-R6 was racing north on 97 Street from 118 Avenue against an unidentified BMW.
After veering onto the sidewalk, the bike slammed into the shelter near 120 Avenue, where four people were waiting for a bus, including a 21-year-old man, a 46-year-old man, an 18-year-old woman, and her 10-month-old son.
Paramedics rushed all four to hospital.
The 21-year-old man was later pronounced dead. The two adults sustained serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening, while the infant’s injuries are serious and potentially life-threatening.
The motorcyclist suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to hospital. He now faces charges of dangerous operation causing death and three counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
Edmonton Police Service are seeking witnesses and anyone who can identify the BMW involved.
