Environment Canada has introduced a new, more targeted thunderstorm and tornado warning system.
This initiative aims to address alert fatigue and reduce the number of weather alerts Canadians receive on their phones. Under the new system, alerts will be specifically focused on areas that forecasters predict will be affected, rather than issuing broad warnings for large regions.
Forecasters can now define a perimeter around the areas most likely to experience severe weather and send alerts directly to phones in that specific zone.
These changes were implemented on August 11 and will only apply to severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. Other alerts, such as heat warnings and thunderstorm watches, will continue to cover larger areas.
