A 36-year-old man from Hinton has been charged with arson following a deliberately set fire at a landfill near Drayton Valley over the weekend.
RCMP and fire crews were called to the scene around midnight on Saturday after reports of a blaze.
Investigators determined that a man had intentionally ignited a large pit containing plastics and waste fuel.
Firefighters worked to bring the fire under control, while Mounties secured the area and searched for the suspect.
The fire was fully extinguished by 3:40 a.m.
Shortly afterward, at approximately 4:15 a.m., RCMP located a man walking along Highway 22 and arrested him.
The 36-year-old now faces charges of arson, mischief exceeding $5,000, and uttering threats.
He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on August 4.
