A vehicle hit an apartment building on Edmonton’s north side Monday night and sparked a fire that left one person dead, another five taken to hospital with injuries and forced evacuation of the entire building.
The Edmonton Police Service said a vehicle struck a mixed use commercial and residential complex in the area of 82 Street and 131 Avenue building and ruptured a gas line, causing an explosion and subsequent fire.
Six residents were treated and transported by EMS to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
An update Tuesday afternoon said the 62-year-old male driver of the vehicle was also treated and transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, where he remains in stable condition.
EPS also said an 85-year-old man jumped from a balcony and was treated by EMS but succumbed to his injuries on scene.
Two residents of the building remain unaccounted for.
In total, there were believed to be at least 35 people living in the 16-suite building. 21 residents are currently receiving support from the Canadian Red Cross and the remaining residents were reportedly not in the building at the time but have been accounted for by police.
Police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
