The 49th annual Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation Pow Wow begins tonight at 7 p.m. at the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation Pow Wow grounds, bringing together dancers, drummers, Elders, and community members for a weekend of culture, tradition and celebration. Patricia Alexis, Coordinator of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation Pow Wow, spoke with The Raven on the upcoming three day gathering, which will feature the visiting Bear Creek Drum group from Quebec and dancers from across the province of Alberta and a few dancers visiting from Arizona, adding that this year’s theme of the Pow Wow is ‘Honouring the Treaties’.
Alexis adds that over the years, the Pow Wow has seen several hundred dancers compete. This year’s event will see 500 dancers spread over various categories such as men’s and women’s fancy, youth and golden ages, and the Late Francis Alexis Memorial Special.
