The Royal Alexandra Hospital is introducing new safety measures to prioritize the safety of patients, staff and visitors in its emergency department (ED).
All patients and visitors will now be limited to one bag per person prior to entry into the ED.
Exceptions will be made for those who require additional bags for medical devices or supplies, or childcare items.
The hospital’s security team will search all bags before entering the department to ensure no weapons or prohibited items are brought into the ED.
Alberta Health Services said reducing the number of bags in the ED will help staff and physicians maintain a safe work environment by keeping aisles clear of tripping hazards, and ensuring chair and table space is available for patients and their support people.
All patients seeking care at the ED may be accompanied by only one visitor or support person to “reduce noise and provide more room for those who need to be there,” AHS said.
Exceptions may be made for patients requiring additional support as determined by the care team.
Patients or caregivers who have questions about the one bag or one visitor per patient policy can reach out to patient relations online or at 1-855-550-2555.
