A team of Métis women athletes is preparing to compete on one of the biggest stages in Indigenous hockey while using their platform to advocate for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP). Representing their communities at the 2026 Fred Sasksamoose National Championships in Saskatoon this May from the 14-16 at the Merlis Belsher Place. The team is also seeking sponsors to help cover travel and expenses as they continue their work in sport, mentorship and advocacy.
Jayden Draney of the Métis Nation Women’s Team tells the Raven Radio Network the invitation is a high honor, saying the chance to compete at the Fred Saskamoose National Championships is a major milestone.
Draney says the Métis Nation Women’s team was formed alongside teammate Martina Desjarlais bringing together athletes with veteran players to the women’s division at this year’s Fred Saskamoose National Championships.
Draney says advocacy for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples will be front and centre, with each player wearing the jersey number of Martina Desjarlais’ younger cousin Adyson King, who went missing last year.
