An Edmonton landmark that has been a staple and a signature K Days since 1974 will no longer be a part of the Expo Centre grounds
Construction crews began this morning to demolish and deconstruct the big yellow slide that is visible from Wayne Gretzky drive.
The Kiwanis slide has been an Edmonton staple since 1974.
However, the slide has not been operational with structural issues since 2019, and since then has been closed to riders.
According to a member of the Kiwanis club , the big yellow slide was never meant to be in operation for more than four or five years.
The slide was a “tradition” for many Edmontonians, and helped raise money for numerous community efforts local to Edmonton including Camp He Ho Ha, Boys and Girls Club, Bissell Centre backpacks for back to school, as well as Christmas meals at local schools according to the news release.
The slide was large enough to accommodate 75-100 riders an hour and required approximately 480 volunteer hours during K-Days, plus another 100 hours in maintenance, set up, and training leading up to the fair.
K-Days 2023 runs from July 21 to 30.
