Mikisew Cree First Nation and allies is hosting a peaceful gathering to learn, discuss and assert their opposition to the proposed Treat and Release of toxic tailings. Mikisew Cree First Nation is standing up to protect the health of people, lands, and waters for future generations.
Treat and Release is one of the proposed management options by Government and Industry to deal with tailing ponds. Tailings are the solid and liquid waste by-products from oil sands operations. Tailings ponds contain toxic substances like naphthenic acids, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons, which may persist even after treatment. No human health and ecological risk assessments have been completed which would support industry and government assertions that treatment of tailings would be safe for downstream communities.
Johanna Luna speaks with Spokesperson Talon Giroux from Keepers of the Water. Mikisew Cree First Nation is standing up to protect the health and people against proposed Treat and Release of Toxic Tailings today at Kiyam Park in Fort McMurray from 1pm to 4pm.
