The film Last Stop Video Rentals was written, directed, and produced by Eric Janvier and sold out the Sunday screening at the Edmonton International Film Festival. Shot at the Movie World rental store in Stony Plain, reflecting Janvier’s personal nostalgia for ’90s video stores.
The film follows a single day in the life of Nick Young, who deals with being dumped, his job at a video store, and his goal of attending the premiere of The Phantom Menace. Janvier shot the film on 16mm film rather than digital to achieve that ’90s feel. Janvier shared how they had to measure and budget how much film tape they had so they wouldn’t run out.
89.3 The Raven spoke with Eric Janvier, and he shares why he decided to produce the film a decade later, after he finished the script, and the importance of timing when releasing a film. He also explains why Physical Media has been growing in popularity again due to more unsatisfied Streaming service users.
