If you’ve ever dreamed of writing for Star Wars, Spider-Man, or Call of Duty, Sam Maggs is living that dream and she’s bringing her epic energy to Edmonton Expo, September 19–21!
I caught up with Sam for a chat that was equal parts inspiring and hilarious. She’s a New York Times bestselling author, comic creator, video game writer, and host and yes, she’s written a Luke Skywalker story. (She was paralyzed with fear for a week. Totally relatable.)
🍫 Coffee Crisp & Canadian Nostalgia
Though she now lives in L.A., Sam’s Canadian roots run deep. She misses Coffee Crisp, bagged milk, and twoonies, so much so that fans have started bringing her chocolate bars at conventions. “I just did one in London, Ontario and I think I got nine plus a box,” she laughed. “I’m set for life!”
🎮 From Geek Blogs to Galaxy Far, Far Away
Sam’s journey started with local nerd blogs. “They were willing to take a chance on a gal who loved comics,” she said. That led to writing gigs, an agent, and eventually working with Lucasfilm. Her novel Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars bridges her love of video games and storytelling.
🎨 What to Expect at Edmonton Expo
Sam will be tabling all weekend in Artist Alley, her favorite part of any con. She’s bringing books, comics, pins, stickers and she’ll happily sign anything and chat with fans.
She’s also excited to see some of the celebrity guests, especially the Hobbits and Smallville cast. “All four Hobbits are the chillest dudes on the planet,” she said. “And Erica Durance? It’s the moment of Superman!”
💡 Advice for Aspiring Creators
Sam’s advice? Start, finish, and share your work.
“Your voice is important. No one can say the things you have to say except for you,” she said. “There are no gatekeepers anymore. You can build your own audience online and if it grows, people will come knocking.”
🎁 Hot Tip: Christmas Shopping!
Sam’s pro tip for Expo-goers? Stock up on original gifts from local artists. “You’re going to find things you won’t see anywhere else,” she said. “That’s where I hoard.”
