
Our province’s numbers ranking joblessness is now the second highest in Canada.
Statistics Canada revealed its Labour Force Survey for August of this year on September 5th, which showed Alberta’s unemployment rate jumping six-tenths of a percentage point to sit at 8.4 per cent, largely higher than the national rate of 7.1 per cent.
Only Newfoundland and Labrador had a higher unemployment rate in August, sitting at 10.7 per cent.
It marked Alberta’s the highest rate since August 2017, not counting when the pandemic hit in 2020.
According to Statistics Canada, the biggest drops were in manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade. Looking at jobless rates in our province’s four largest cities,the capital’s is highest in August, climbing to 8.5 per cent from 7.9 per cent the month before. Calgary’s jobless rate sat at 7.7 per cent in August. Lethbridge and Red Deer both had unemployment rates of 6.7 per cent in August, up from 5.7 per cent and 5.4 per cent.
The city with the largest jobless rate across the country was Windsor, Ontario at 11.1 per cent.
