This week at the Edmonton Fringe Festival, audiences have the chance to meet a character like no other: Elon Muskrat – a suave, satirical, slightly dangerous businessman trying to sell you his latest big project… a casino.
The brain behind the muskrat? Josh Languedoc: playwright, storyteller, and performer. I sat down with Josh to talk about how this show came to life. What started as a joke between friends slowly grew into something bigger: an oral storytelling Buffon piece that blends satire, stand-up comedy and even some surprise singing, dancing, and rapping.
At its heart, Elon Muskrat is sharp and funny but also layered with something deeper. Josh is passionate about bringing Indigenous voices and perspectives to the stage, and the show doesn’t shy away from poking and provoking in the best way possible.
As Josh told me, “I hope people laugh, but I also hope they walk away thinking about some of the Indigenous issues I bring up in the play.”
