A member of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has been charged with assault following a 2024 traffic stop.
On Friday, June 21, 2024, EPS observed a Dodge Challenger with an expired license plate and a traffic stop was conducted.
The 52-year-old male driver became aggressive and was placed under arrest but EPS said a further physical struggle ensued, and the driver suffered minor injuries.
Paramedics attended the scene to treat and assess the driver, though he did not require transport to hospital.
The EPS Professional Standards Branch (PSB) investigated the incident and the case was referred to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Services in Calgary to determine if criminal charges were warranted.
Prosecutors recommended that the EPS officer be charged with assault.
On Aug. 14, the EPS Professional Standards Branch (PSB) charged Const. Mohamed Elgendy with one count of assault in relation to his actions at the traffic stop.
Const. Elgendy has just under three years of service with the EPS and will be placed in a non-operational role EPS said.
