On Aug. 31, Albertans are invited to celebrate 120 years of culture, innovation and community spirit as Alberta marks a major milestone.
Alberta was established as a province on Sept. 1, 1905, through the Alberta Act and today Sept. 1 is known as Alberta Day.
This year, Alberta’s government is making Alberta Day a full-day celebration.
The main festivities kick off on Aug. 31 at 11 a.m., coming to life at the legislature grounds in Edmonton and Heritage Park in Calgary.
Albertans are invited to gather, connect and celebrate 120 years of history and growth while enjoying free cultural dance and music performances, kids’ crafts, local vendors, food trucks and much more.
“This Alberta Day marks 120 years since Alberta became a province! It will be an unforgettable day celebrating this major milestone, and the people and traditions that have shaped this amazing province and Alberta’s rich history within Canada,” said Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women for Alberta.
Local musical talent from Alberta will take the stage in the evening with 12-time Country Music Alberta Awards-winning band The Prairie States headlining the Edmonton show, and CCMA-nominated singer-songwriter Jake Mathews headlining in Calgary.
The day will wrap up around 9 p.m. in both cities with colourful aerial drone shows that light up the night sky.
40 municipalities will also be hosting celebrations from Friday Aug. 29 to Monday Sept. 1 and a full list can be found here.
