I had the chance to sit down with Harlee Courtepatte, a proud Cree language advocate, storyteller, and entrepreneur. We talked about the power of reclaiming and reconnecting with Indigenous languages, how his son has inspired him to create many different things including an Indigenous cartoon and a couple businesses!
Harlee is the creator of the Cree Language project, a vibrant and growing online resource for anyone wanting to learn more about nêhiyawêwin (the Cree language). From mini-lessons to full stories told in Cree, it’s a beautiful example of Indigenous knowledge shared with intention and a site you’ll want to bookmark, whether you’re just starting to learn or deepening your understanding.
Language revitalization is more than a cultural project – it’s a movement. It’s about connection, healing, and ensuring that future generations can speak the words of their ancestors with pride.
Prairie Stories and Language in Action
You also have to check out Stories of the Prairies, Harlee and team released the first group of animated videos based on traditional indigenous stories. Stories From The Prairies is designed to create awareness of Cree traditions and culture.
Harlee also started the Ihtiwin Business School a space for real-world learning, entrepreneurial thinking, and applied leadership! Harlee’s work reminds us that learning doesn’t always come from textbooks, sometimes, it starts with a story, a conversation, or a simple game of “This or That.”
