The Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is keeping thousands of pet bellies full across the province after receiving a large food donation.
With a $2.2 million donation from pet food company ZIWI, the Alberta SPCA has been able to give nearly 23,000 thousand bags of cat and dog food to several animal welfare organizations.
In a Monday news release, the SPCA said many groups are at capacity with little room for additional animals and these organizations are under financial stress as they work to feed the animals.
“We are in an animal welfare crisis and this incredibly generous donation from ZIWI will go a long way in helping feed hungry pets, as well as relieving some financial burden for pet guardians and animal sheltering organizations,” said Alberta SPCA executive director Leanne Niblock in a statement.
ZIWI regularly reviews its inventory to find which products should be used before their recommended expiry dates.
“Rather than let these items go unused, we’re proud to donate them to organizations like the Alberta SPCA where they can make an immediate positive impact for pets in need,” said Jessia Dulin, director of marketing and communications for ZIWI.
Some of the food is being used to help feed pets displaced by wildfires in Alberta and across the prairies.
More than 37,000 bags were originally intended for Alberta, but also went to help Winnipeg with the pressing need in Manitoba the release said.
