Good news for us Edmontonians! : Our municipality has been named the best city in Canada to survive a zombie apocalypse.
The rental market aggregator Rentola looked at data from Statistics Canada for 35 cities across the country, ranking each on a variety of factors. Prairie locations did well overall, with Saskatoon at No. 2, Calgary in fourth place, Regina fifth and Winnipeg sixth. Quebec and points east tended to do more poorly, with Saint John, N.B. placing dead last (and undead last), and four of the bottom six locations in Quebec.
The five categories of ranking were vulnerability, hideouts, safety, mobility and supplies.
Vulnerability looked at factors such as population density, existing levels of chronic diseases, and the influx of tourists. Hideouts calculated average household size, parks or green spaces, and housing vacancy rates. Safety was based on the local crime rate and statistics about the availability of firearms and the location of military bases.
Edmonton did relatively well in most categories, placing 19th in terms of vulnerability and 14th for supplies, West Edmonton Mall notwithstanding. But the Alberta capital ranked first in both hideouts — Fort Edmonton Park comes to mind — and mobility. And speaking of malls, a separate study recently determined the best malls in the U.S. to ride out a zombie invasion, no doubt drawing inspiration from George A. Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead.
