An Edmonton man has been arrested for his role in an alleged sexual assault of a child in Vietnam.
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) worked alongside U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, and Vietnamese authorities in an extensive investigation to identify the suspect.
The suspect was identified following an extensive investigation by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation unit, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, and Vietnamese authorities.
Christopher Webber was arrested on May 15 with help from the Edmonton Police Service.
Webber, 55, is accused of counselling the sexual offence of a child over a livestream sometime between 2021 and 2022 police said.
The investigation relates to a video recording of a livestream event that was posted online and depicts the sexual assault of a child.
International authorities were able to identify the child, who is believed to have been between two and three years old at the time, and their assailant. Both were located in Vietnam.
Police said the suspect is seen participating in the video recording remotely. He allegedly directed the sexual abuse and, at the time, his identity and whereabouts were unknown.
U.S. Homeland Security Investigations and B.C. RCMP’s Internet Child Exploitation unit helped with the identification process.
Webber has been charged with:
- Sexual interference;
- Making arrangements to commit sexual offence against a child;
- Making child pornography;
- Possession child pornography; and
- Accessing child pornography.
Webber was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on June 11.
