The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged 11 owners of 10 local tow truck companies in relation to fraudulent billing practices to insurance companies.
Investigations by the EPS began in July 2024 into the business practices of tow truck companies that were reportedly demanding people to use their services at the scenes of collisions.
Police discovered that numerous tow truck companies in Edmonton were reportedly fraudulently billing insurance companies for services that were not provided.
EPS also said these companies were allegedly inflating bills, including charging upwards of $5,000 for a basic collision tow that is estimated to typically cost only a few hundred dollars.
Between March and May of this year, the owners of these companies were charged with fraud:
- AMK Towing
- Avenue Towing
- Discount Towing Ltd.
- Edmonton Towing Services Ltd.
- Infinity Towing & Recovery Services Corp.
- My Big Tow Inc.
- Same Boss Towing Ltd. (formerly Super Towing Ltd.)
- TBT Towing Ltd.
- Unlimited Towing & Recovery Service Ltd.
- 2652736 Alberta Inc.
EPS estimates the companies fraudulently billed insurance companies an estimated combined total of over $120,000.
Police do not believe that these independent businesses or their owners have any professional relation to one another.
Court dates for these business owners have been taking place over the month of May. The investigation into reports of fraud regarding additional tow truck companies remains ongoing.
