A newly appointed official bird of Edmonton is currently in discussions.
The organization Bird Friendly is leaving the decision of which bird that will be in the hands of its residents.
The Edmonton chapter of the organization has created a poll in hopes to find the first official bird of the provincial capital.
Nature Canada announced in May 2022 that Edmonton has become the 8th city in Canada to receive Bird Friendly City Certification.
And while magpies. crows and pigeons appear to be the most prominent birds we see, there are over 300 bird species that have been recorded throughout the city.
Some play visitor and migrate to and from their breeding grounds in warmer climates, while others are permanent fixtures year round.
After consulting hundreds of naturalists and residents, the organization has narrowed it down to six birds of which one will be chosen to represent the city.
And the nominees are:
Blue Jay
Downy Woodpecker
Red Breasted Nut Hatch
