The alleged drunk driver who is responsible for killing NHL all-star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew appeared in a New Jersey court room Thursday morning to face a judge.
The detention hearing for the accused was pushed back to Sept. 13 as per Michael J. Silvanio, the judge in the matter.
Silvanio cited that a meeting took place between the accused’s lawyers and prosecutors, with both sides coming to an agreement to reschedule the date.
Shawn Higgins, a husband and father of two daughters drove his Jeep Grand Cherokee into the back of the brothers while they were on their bicycles.
Police said the brothers were riding in the area when they were struck by a man driving a Jeep. Officers said the 43-year-old driver, was taken into custody, and that they believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Higgins told police he consumed ” 5-6 beers” ahead of the incident and admitted to consuming alcohol while driving according to the criminal complaint obtained by The Associated Press.
Tributes have taken place with fans in both Calgary and Columbus showing their love by way of a candle light vigil, framed photos, sticks, jerseys, painting and chalk art.
The accused appeared to be dispirited after finding out he would be spending another weekend behind bars.
