For the first time in more than 40 years, the province of Alberta has a new license plate. It features Moraine Lake, an iconic destination in Banff National Park, and the motto “Strong and Free”, which the province says references the Alberta Latin motto, and serves as a nod to the Canadian anthem.
“The wait is over, and Alberta’s new license plate is officially hitting the road. Albertans chose the iconic Moraine Lake to showcase our Strong and Free spirit. It’s a plate Albertans can proudly show off, whether driving to work, the lake or across the country.” said Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction.
More than 240,000 Albertans voted to select the design for the new plate. If you would like to exchange your current plate for the new one, you can visit a registry office, and pay a $20 fee, as well as a $15 registry agent service charge. Or, wait until your vehicle registration renewal date, for a $15 charge.
Motorists are not required to swap their plate, as the previous license plate may still be used, as long as it is in good condition. However, any Albertan getting a new plate will get a new number, and will have to update their insurance.
