Treaty 8 Sovereign Nation is planning to develop a mixed-income affordable housing project in Grande Prairie.
Officials from the treaty are seeking to acquire two lots in the Smith neighborhood, located next to Keyera Place. The first lot, known as Lot 4, is owned by the provincial government, while the second, Lot 6, is owned by the city. If both lots are successfully transferred to the treaty, they would be able to construct up to 63 townhouses, including options that may feature up to four-bedroom suites.
“Combining both lots would allow for a larger mixed-income affordable housing development,” said Treaty 8 CAO Jamie Koe.
However, if the treaty is unable to acquire Lot 4, they plan to downscale the project to 24 units. The treaty has already discussed acquiring Lot 4 with the provincial government, but no official agreement has been made yet.
Funding for the project will come from various government sources. During a presentation by the treaty on October 14, the city council chose to make a motion requesting that the administration prepare a report on the potential transfer of Lot 6.
Additionally, the council approved a motion to send a letter of support to the provincial government regarding the transfer of Lot 4.
Depending on funding and approvals, construction for the potential project may not start until the second or third quarter of 2027.
